The First Amendment is cool. It’s important. It’s a cornerstone of our democratic government.
Stand up. Sit down. Speak out! was an education project at Dominican University of California March 12-16 to bring awareness and appreciation for free expression in many areas of public life – journalism, politics, religion, art, music, film and comedy.
We hosted Free to Laugh! comedy night at Throckmorton Theatre, highlighting the role of stand-up comedy and free speech throughout our modern culture. Mort Sahl, one of the pioneers of political satire, gave a special appearance and was on stage to help accept The Liberty Tree Award to the theatre from Dominican for Throckmorton’s on-going commitment to freedom of expression.
Our State of the First Amendment panel discussion treated a packed house to a lively Q&A with journalists, first amendment lawyers and free speech advocates who reminded us what an important – and still abused – right the First Amendment is.
More than 40 students won cash and prizes during the 1st Amendment Team Trivia and ice cream social as they showed off their newly attained free speech knowledge.
